Symptoms of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza

The symptoms of the new pandemic influenza are similar to normal seasonal flu symptoms and most commonly include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • Body aches
  • Headache and chills.

Some people with pandemic influenza have also reported vomiting and diarrhoea.

While most people with this influenza have had a relatively mild illness, which has lasted a week or less, some have had severe complications. It is important to keep a close watch on people with influenza and to seek medical advice if their condition deteriorates. See “When someone should seek medical care

Some people are at greater risk of severe complications if they catch pandemic influenza, and these people should see their health care provider immediately if they develop flu symptoms. See “People at risk of severe outcomes
