First Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza related death in the ACT

ACT Health officials have confirmed the death of a 54-year-old man who tested positive to H1N1 Influenza 09 .

The man died suddenly in Canberra Hospital on 28 July 2009.

The man’s death was the first in the ACT in which Pandemic influenza may have been an associated factor.

ACT Health reports that the man who had underlying medical conditions, had been admitted to Canberra Hospital with respiratory distress and had died a short time later.

However this death is still to be confirmed by the coroner and, at the request of ACT Health, is not being counted in the national death tally at this stage.
